The Honourable Jackie Trad
The Honourable Jackie Trad MP, Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Planning recently visited the island where she is pictured with some of the trainees.

With the backing of $2.6 million in state government funding, 15 young Palm Islanders are currently working on two important projects designed to improve community space, support tourism growth, improve health and safety and create new employment opportunities.

Palm Island Shire Council Mayor Alf Lacey said the council was very happy to have received the funding under the government’s $200 million Works for Queensland program.

‘We have been able to employ four trainees and 11 casual workers aged between 16 and 21 years old,’ he said.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity to create jobs for our young people and to help us to improve the safety and liveability of our island, making it a great place to live as well as to visit.’

Works for Queensland is administered by the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and is part of the government’s $2 billion State Infrastructure Fund established to help create jobs and deliver vital infrastructure throughout regional Queensland.

The Palm Island Shire Council will use the funding for the beautification of the foreshore at  Coolgaree Bay between the pontoon and the bistro.

The $953,440 project involves upgrading the footpath and lighting as well as undertaking landscaping, irrigation and vegetation.

The $1.646 million Coolgaree Bay Community Connectivity project includes the construction of a footpath and lighting from the helipad to Manbarra Road.

It is designed to improve access as well as the safety, health and mobility of Palm Island residents and visitors.

The Works for Queensland program will deliver more than 720 infrastructure projects supporting almost 6000 jobs throughout regional Queensland.

Projects which receive funding must be completed by November 2017.
